SensAbility Scheme Renewed to Support Inclusive and Dignified Housing

PRESS RELEASE BY THE MINISTRY FOR SOCIAL AND AFFORDABLE ACCOMMODATION

During a press conference, minister for Social and Affordable Housing, Roderick Galdes, announced the renewal of the SensAbility scheme. Over the past four years, an investment of approximately €310,000 has enabled 64 families to benefit from this scheme, providing multisensory rooms within their homes for children and adults with autism, ADHD, Down syndrome, and other developmental or sensory needs.

“In announcing this scheme, we had stressed that this initiative is a testament to a holistic and dynamic policy, a policy that is not based on any static list that is not modified as necessary. Through this mentality, we take the necessary decisions, which make a tangible difference in every citizen’s life, without making any distinction between one person and another. This is because we truly believe in the dignity of every person, as well as promoting the abilities of the individual,” said Minister Galdes.

The minister explained that the scheme provides funding of up to €6,000 per application, without being subject to a means test or the income of the applicant’s family. He added that beneficiaries can equip a multisensory room tailored to their individual needs, specifically designed to combine a range of stimuli that support sensory development and enhance the use of particular senses.

“I was pleased to speak with the parents and families of the beneficiaries, who shared the difference this room, equipped with specialised equipment, has made in their own home by strengthening the abilities of those who benefit from the scheme. This reflects the scheme’s main objective: to prioritise the needs of beneficiaries and ensure they live in a dignified environment that meets their personal needs,” concluded Minister Galdes.

The CEO of the Housing Authority, Matthew Zerafa highlighted that “through its Customer-Centric Approach, the Authority is putting the realities and aspirations of the families it serves, at the centre of all its operations.”
